Meet the Horses

Bigg Jet
Big Jett - 18 years old
Jett came to us in 2014. I was contacted by a person who operates a feed lot that sells horses for slaughter. Don contacted me and said he had a nice horse that was his neighbors. Don explained that Jett was a great horse with ranch and cutting horse background, however, Jett was lame and sore on his front feet. His owner deemed Jett not worthy to keep. Don saw that Jett needed a home and we provided that home thanks to Don.
Jet is the herd's patriarch; his leadership and courage provides a sense of calm and wellbeing in the herd. Jetts feet still get sore now and then, but we provide natural foot care that has been helpful. Jett is one of my closest friends and he has taught me much about true leadership and what a genuine heart should be.

Daisy
Daisey - 7 years old
The story of Daisey could not be told without her momma. Like a lot of us, Daisey got a good start from her momma, Razzy. (You can read more about Razzy in the “Memorial” section). Daisey was born in our care before we were a sanctuary. She foaled in 2015. Daisey is our first mule as her momma was a Paint quarter horse and her Sire was a Mammoth Jack Donkey. Daisey came to us as a surprise and a gift! She has a unique personality and a strong spirit of courage. Mules live over thirty years and I expect to have her at the sanctuary all of that time. Daisey is the herd's strong-willed teenager, and she blends well with many of the horses. Being a mule, she has a very protective instinct.

Tonto
Tonto - 9-11 years old
Tonto came to us in 2018 as a 5 to 7-year-old paint horse gelding. He is a magnificent looking creature, his markings and build are beautiful. He is also one of the four horses that came to us from Happy Horse Haven rescue in Texas. He finds himself third in hierarchy, behind Jett and Navarrone. However he is always up for showing his athletic prowess with his acrobatic skills. When Tonto arrived at our facility he was head shy and even putting a halter on him was a challenge. With consistency and a kind hand Tonto has grown to trust. It’s impossible to know the history of the horses that come to us. Just as with people sometimes we carry pain from the past with us to the future. Horses have an amazing way of being in the present, in the now. In addition if they have been treated poorly in the past they can sense when energy is the same. Tonto is intuitive about such energy. An integral part of the herd.

Farrah
Farrah - 8 years old
Farrah came to us as a four year old in the spring of 2018. She is a quarter horse mare and one of the four horses that came to us from Happy Horse Haven Rescue in Texas. Farrah has become the matriarch of our herd. Her calm intelligence and sensibility is demonstrated when a new person or intruder enters the paddock. She is kind but firm with all creatures. Farrah has acquired her name from the 70’s actress Farrah Fawcett. Ms. Fawcett was known for her beautiful flowing hair and our Farrah also has a beautiful flowing mane and forelock and a gorgeous tail.
Farrah is a heart horse… meaning she will steal your heart and give you hers.

Angel
Angel - 8 years old
Angel came to us in 2018 as a 3 to 4 year old quarter horse mare. She is just over a pony size. Meaning over 13 hands tall so technically she’s a horse not a pony. Angel is also one of the four horses that came to us from happy horse human rescue in Texas. Angel is a petite girl and very intelligent. She is second mare in the herd to Farrah and just like adult sisters they have a bond but not always close. Angel is a horse that is sensitive to what a person is feeling. Most horses reflect the emotions of humans. Angel seems to be attuned to human emotions. If you are sad she will be the one to nuzzle you. However, if you were angry or aggressive she will reflect that back to you. What a gift to have honesty in our herd.

Duke
Duke - 7-9 years old
Duke came to us in 2018 as a 3 to 5 year old quarter horse gelding. Duke is also one of the horses they came to us from Happy Horse Haven Rescue in Texas. Duke is as charismatic as a Hollywood actor. He is playful and loving. Duke is the type of horse that offers you all his heart. His role in the herd is one of peacemaker. He is the one horse who can interact with every horse in the herd. Duke will always bring out the warmth and joy in a person. He always has the equivalent of a smile in his demeanor. He’s an interesting horse in the herd whereas he is secure in all interactions with the other horses in the herd. He will always be the first to greet you.

Grace
Grace - 20-24 years old
Grace came to us as a 13 to 15-year-old thoroughbred mare. Grace was alone on a 20 acre pasture near Lyle, Washington in the Columbia River Gorge. A passerby noticed her as he drove past on his daily commute. Seeing her every day he noticed that she was very thin. He stopped and also noticed that she was without water. Through his caring nature he started stopping by daily to give Grace treats. He could observe that she indeed needed more food. The story of how this man contacted us will make you believe that there is no such thing as coincidence. The man who was stopping by and feeding Grace was at a local garden restaurant in Hood River, Oregon. He was at the cashier and overheard a conversation with a friend of ours talking about our horse sanctuary. He interjected and asked if he could get our contact information. We connected and began the dialogue of the condition and situation of Grace. We were able to contact the owners and explain who and what we do for horses. The owner had been recently injured and was not able to provide time for her. We were able to create an agreement with the owner and Grace came to Cimarron Equine Sanctuary. Grace as her name indicates is a beauty with a graceful, kind loving heart. Grace was accepted into the herd and mentored by our matriarch Farrah. Grace can melt your heart by the kindness and gentle look in her eyes. I have seen Grace offer security when the emotion of anxiety is displayed. It’s almost as if she is saying “it’s okay, I understand”. Grace captured my heart and I’m sure she will yours as well.

Breezy
Breezy - 30 years old
Our Breezy Day, a quarter horse gelding, came to us in 2019 from a friend of mine who loved and cared for him since he was young. As I understand it, he was foaled and grew up in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. His previous owner/mom loved breezy so much she observed that her teenage daughters may be pushing him too hard as the writing skills developed. Breezy came to us to live out his days as a horse that has wisdom and experience to share. Breezy is a calm, cool and wise sage of a horse. He is gentle of body and spirit. When Breezy arrived he was the lowest gelding in the hierarchy of the herd. The mares especially pushed him. During the time with the herd Breezy has demonstrated calm, cool personability and interacts with most of the horses including our Daisy. Breezy is special in that he can communicate his emotions with his eyes. Breezy has a special place in my heart.

Pete
Pete - 25-32 years old
in 2020 Pete came to us as a 23 to 30 year old quarter horse gelding. Pete was purchased by Cimarron Equine Sanctuary from an auction in Enumclaw, Washington. We had identified Pete as a prime candidate for a kill buyer to purchase and were able to outbid the kill buyer and Pete came home with us to Cimarron Equine Sanctuary & Center For Learning. The story goes that Pete was an ex rodeo horse, and he has demonstrated his experience. It’s obvious Pete has traveled many miles in life. What I like about Pete most is that he is a problem solver. If he is stuck behind a horse that won't let him have food, he silently moves and convinces the horse to let them in to eat. Pete is a senior horse, and lowest horse in the hierarchy. Pete arrived when he was very thin and had two scars around his head. He’s also very head shy. In combination with the head scars it appears as if someone left a halter on Pete until there were sores. These days Pete is a gem of a horse. Always comes to greet you with his gentle spirit and Petey grin.

Desmond
Desmond - 9 years old
Des is a nine-year-old Fresian draft gelding. He is one of the newest family herd members. I was contacted in November 2021 by our local Hood River animal control deputy that a horse was being neglected. She provided our information to the owner who contacted me. The owner had a change in his life situation and asked if we could accept the horse. It took a couple months and we were able to free up space for Desmond to come to the sanctuary. He is a gentle and kind giant. I have noticed that his demeanor and energy is of peace and comfort. Des loves to be brushed and has a sense of body awareness.

Jack
Jack- 23 to 28 years old
Jack is a handsome paint gelding. Jack came to us from an owner who was experiencing a life transition. Jack has developed cataracts and due to his age there is not much to do for him besides create a safe environment and provide the human contact that he has been used to. Jack has a gentle demeanor and a soft energy that is relaxing to be around. If you have a fear of horses then I encourage you to come meet Jack.

Bayou
Bayou is a 23-year-old gaited walker who arrived at our sanctuary on October 31, 2023. For over 20 years, he was loved and cared for by the same owner, but life changes forced his previous human to make the difficult decision to rehome him. We were fortunate to have space and are delighted to welcome Bayou into our herd.
Living in a herd environment is a new experience for Bayou, as he was accustomed to being in a stall or alone in a paddock. Bayou is very intelligent, and you have to earn his trust. When horses come to us, we often don’t know their full history. In Bayou’s case, he favors one of his rear legs due to an injury. Despite this, he has made remarkable progress in interacting with the other horses. Initially, he would avoid the other horses, but now he has integrated well and found his place in the herd.
You can be part of Bayou’s support family by helping sponsor him financially.

Step
Step is a remarkable 33 to 34-year-old gaited horse who has been fortunate to live with his previous family for many years, receiving love and excellent care. Unlike many horses that arrive at our sanctuary, Step has known the warmth of a dedicated family.
Step joins us as a transfer and continues to receive financial support from his previous family, ensuring his ongoing care. As a senior horse, Step is a kind and gentle soul, exuding warmth and enjoying the attention he receives from visitors.
When you visit our sanctuary, you'll have the chance to meet Step in person and experience his gentle nature firsthand. While Step does receive some financial support, we often encounter unforeseen situations that require additional resources.
You can become part of Step's extended support family by helping sponsor him financially. Your support ensures that Step and other horses at our sanctuary continue to thrive in a natural herd environment.

Fancy
Fancy is a 22-year-old Quarter Horse mare who came to us as a surrender along with her partner, Summer. Fancy was part of a family who took her in when she was not thriving in her previous situation. Unfortunately, due to a life change, the family had to find a new home for Fancy, and she found her way to our sanctuary.
Fancy has an old injury that has left some scar tissue on the right side of her head. Despite this, she is a remarkably intelligent and kind horse. She is currently on a journey of learning to trust again. When she first arrived, she would run from being haltered, but now she comes up willingly and lowers her head—a clear sign that she is becoming more comfortable with people.
Fancy is currently not sponsored, and we warmly welcome your financial sponsorship. By becoming part of Fancy's support family, you can help ensure she receives the care and love she needs to continue thriving in her new home.

Summer
Summer is a 28-year-old Quarter Horse mare who arrived at the sanctuary as a surrender along with her companion, Fancy. She spent many years with a loving family, but a life change forced them to rehome her. Sadly, finding a new home for an older horse can be challenging, but we are delighted to welcome Summer to our sanctuary.
Summer is a beautiful soul who loves to be brushed and handled. Her openness and gentle nature are truly rare, making her a favorite when introducing people, especially children, to horses. We are so pleased that Summer will spend the rest of her life in a natural herd environment here at our sanctuary.

Rallo
Rallo is a 25-year-old stallion who came to us as a surrender in May 2024. When he arrived, he was emaciated and had been neglected. This gentle soul has endured hardships that have left him fearful and apprehensive. It’s clear that he has suffered trauma, making trust a difficult thing for him to offer.
At Cimarron Equine Sanctuary, we are committed to providing Rallo with the care and space he needs to heal. As an elderly horse, Rallo receives daily care, including Haystack Special Blend supplements to ensure he gets the nutrition he requires.
Rallo’s story is not unique. After years of serving his previous caretaker, life circumstances led to the need for a new home, and we are fortunate to have the space to offer him a safe and loving environment.
However, Rallo’s ongoing care comes at a cost, and we rely on your support to continue providing for him. His monthly sponsorship is $750, which helps cover his feed, supplements, and medical needs.
By becoming part of Rallo's digital family, you can help us give him the care he deserves. Your sponsorship will make a significant difference in his life.
Let me know if you’d like any further changes!
